Andres Chong apparently knows how to recharge his batteries at halftime.
The
Grand Canyon University Men's Club Soccer freshman from Chula Vista, California, scored in the 48
th minute and again on a penalty kick in the 51
st as the Lopes blanked Kings FC II, 4-0, Sunday in Glendale. Lopes' sophomore goalkeeper
Tyler Ferrari made six saves for the shutout, and GCU doubled up Kings in shots, 20-10. The win kept the Lopes (8-0-1 overall, 4-0 UPSL Arizona South) perfect in conference action and all alone atop the standings with a three-point edge over 2
nd-place Yuma City FC. GCU has outscored its conference opponents by a whopping 14-1 margin.
"It was huge for Andres to get two goals in this match," said
Lopes' Head Coach Luke Pilarski. "They not only helped put the game away early in the second half but also rewarded a player for his consistent hard work."
As he seems to do nearly every match these days, GCU sophomore
Reeise Remmer got things started early with the first score in the 5th minute, and freshman
Eli Squire doubled the lead in the 28th minute to give the Lopes a 2-0 edge at halftime before Chong's quick pair put the match away.
Ferrari – who made the title-preserving stop in the final seconds of the Aztec Cup championship match in San Diego last weekend – kept Kings off the board for the full 90 minutes.
"
(Starting goalkeeper) Riley (Snyder) is still hurt, so we relied on Ferrari, who was great at playing quickly and not messing around with the ball at his feet," said Pilarski. "Our back line did a great job making Tyler's job easier throughout the game. This is a great moment for him because it just reassures his and it reassures the team we can get shut outs with multiple sets of personnel."
The Lopes return to
Colter Field for the first time in nearly a month this weekend for a crucial pair of UPSL Arizona South matches. GCU hosts Kings FC II in the back half of the home-and-home series on Saturday, October 24
th at 4PM, then welcomes Yuma City FC in a matchup of the conference's top two teams on Sunday, October 25
th at 4PM. Admission to both matches is FREE.
