Nearly everyone at
Colter Field Saturday felt the heat and humidity of 96 sticky degrees at the 3PM kickoff.
Reeise Remmer, however, was nothing but cool.
The
Grand Canyon University Men's Club Soccer sophomore used some flashy footwork in finding the back of the net four times in the first 25 minutes as the Lopes' Purple team ran away from OJB FC Prescott, 7-0, in GCU's home opener for the 2026 season. The 5-0 halftime lead was more than enough incentive for Lopes' goalie
Riley Snyder to make a few diving stops on OJB shots in the second half to stamp his second straight shutout after helping the Lopes blank Phoenix Heat FC, 1-0, in their season opener last weekend.
"We were happy to see our group attacking so well - especially early," said
Lopes' Head Coach Luke Pilarski. "We came out with a more aggressive lineup than some other matches with the intention of scoring early to control the game on a hot day. I don't know if any of us expected four from Reeise (and five overall in the first half), though."
The team from Prescott had barely gotten its game jerseys on and walked to midfield for the introductions before the Lopes' attack had the squad on its heels. The majority of the first 45 minutes was spent in OJB's zone, keeping OJB goalie Andrew Kurnat on the move before Remmer broke the scoreless tie in the 9
th minute. Nine minutes later, Remmer waited for his next chances and scored twice within a 90-second stretch – one off his back heel, and then one he popped up in the air himself before delivering a laser across the goal to the far side of the net. The fourth and final goal for the Chicago, Illinois native was one even he didn't think counted, since the last of a series of volleys off a corner kick suddenly caromed toward Remmer near the goalie box. Remmer turned and pushed it past Kurnat into the net but turned away with slumped shoulders thinking he was off-sides and the goal would be disallowed. No call came, and Remmer had a four-goal haul on the day. GCU sophomore
Niko Uzelac capped off the 1
st-half scoring by redirecting an
Alex Zimmerman header into the net.
The rest of the afternoon showed off as much of GCU's defense as it did its offensive skills. Both of the Lopes' second-half goals came off steals deep in OJB's zone that led to the first career goals for GCU freshmen
Hayden Stalls and
Eli Squire.
"The team knows the harder they work defensively, the more chances we will have to score," said Pilarski. "Our backline always has the goal of keeping a clean sheet, and that's what we focused on in this one. They stay involved in our attacks and build up possession. Our guys had plenty to do this weekend and got lots of touches on the ball."
The Lopes now spend nearly a full month away from home with Sunday road matches against Next Level Academy this weekend, the Aztec Cup in San Diego California, next weekend, then the front half of a home-and-home against Kings FC on October 18
th. The Lopes will then host Kings FC on Saturday afternoon, October 24
th at 4PM on the GCU campus, and admission to the match is FREE.
