The Grand Canyon University Men's Club Soccer Team 1's trip to San Diego State University for the Aztec Cup last weekend ended early as the team was unable to move to the championship rounds. The Lopes started the tournament with a 2-0 loss to UC-San Diego, salvaged a 1-1 tie with highly regarded UC-Davis, then finished strong with a 5-1 win over the Colorado School of Mines. Their 1-1-1 pool play record wasn't enough to move on.
"Our team is doing a lot of good things," said GCU Assistant Coach Damian Tule. "We just need to clean some simple errors up and capitalize on more of the opportunities we get offensively."
Dropping the first game of the weekend Friday morning against UCSD put the Lopes in a hole early, but they responded in nearly upsetting UCD before the Aggies scored late to salvage the tie.
"We knew that beating UC Davis would give us a lot of good momentum," said Tule. "It would help us get some crucial points going into our final game."
Unfortunately for the Lopes, the tie left them one point short of qualifying for the championship round - despite their victory over the Miners.
The Lopes didn't take long to bounce back from the weekend, knocking off the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks this past Tuesday, winning, 3-1, in Flagstaff
