GCU Flag Football falls in City of Scottsdale Championship Game, 20-6

2nd-half offensive woes stop Lopes from winning 2nd title in last 8 months

Unable to sustain the momentum of an opening touchdown drive, the Grand Canyon University Flag Football team finished second in the City of Scottsdale Division 2 Flag Football League's fall season, losing, 20-6, to the Avengers. It was the second straight week that the two teams faced off against each other in a meaningful game, since the Lopes secured the regular season title by topping the Avengers, 13-12, on November 5. The loss snapped the Lopes' six-game winning streak, and prevented GCU from winning their second straight title, having won the spring session title last March.

Clinching the top seed gave the Lopes a first-round bye for Playoff Saturday – as well as a chance to do some last-minute scouting of their opponents in Saturday's early games. The scouting report certainly worked to begin the championship matchup as the Lopes took the opening kickoff, marched down the field with ease, and the familiar combination of Lopes' sophomore quarterback (and co-head coach) Sam Martin to sophomore wide receiver Kristian Fralich for a touchdown pass gave GCU an early 6-0 edge.

The defenses kept things scoreless for the rest of the first half, but the Avengers returned serve on their opening drive of the second half, taking advantage of a Lopes' blown coverage in the end zone to tie the score at 6-6. From there, the Avengers made the Lopes pay for every miscue, turning a Martin interception into the tiebreaking TD, then keeping Martin off-balance with their pass rush to shut down the GCU offense.

"Although it's not the outcome we wanted, there is no sort of disappointment towards our team," said Martin. "We're proud of the season we put together and excited to see what next season holds."

Fralich wound up with four receptions for 60 yards and the score to lead the way for the Lopes, who finish their fall season with a 6-2 overall mark.
