Quick turnaround. Quick results.
After forfeiting its first week's game due to the early start of the City of Scottsdale Adult Football League, the
Grand Canyon University Men's Flag Football Team emphatically evened up its overall record at 1-1 with a 20-7 victory Tuesday night at Vista del Camino Park in Scottsdale.
It's always a challenge for the team each September, since the start of the school year and the start of the City of Scottsdale league usually are divided by a handful of days. This year was no exception, with the two starts separated by one week. It didn't give
Lopes' Head Coach Eric Liebman and company a chance to get players – nearly all of which are first-year guys - signed up and medically cleared, so they wisely told league officials that the September 10
th game was a forfeit and gave themselves proper time to sign, clear and prepare.
Those scant days of preparation paid dividends from the start of Tuesday's matchup – on both sides of the ball. Glendale native (and Centennial High School alum)
Trevor Poplawski was the pacesetter in his first game in Lopes' purple, reeling in a touchdown catch and a two-point conversion on the offensive side of the ball, then snatching three interceptions on defense. On the other end of the touchdown pass as first-year Lopes' quarterback
Payton Curry, who not only threw the TD strike to Poplawski but one to sophomore wideout
Trey Roach.
The win should give the Lopes a little comfort zone as they use their second full week of practice to prep for Week 3 of the league and their game on Tuesday, September 24 at 9:30PM. All league games are held at Vista del Camino Park in Scottsdale, admission is FREE.
