The Grand Canyon University Men's Club Soccer Team 1 played their first intersquad match of the season against the University of Arizona Saturday night at the Practice Soccer Field on the GCU Campus, tying the Wildcats, 1-1, and moving their record to 1-0-1 on the season.
Much like Wednesday's match between GCU Team 1 and GCU Team 2, this one got off to a quick start. Lopes' left winger Collin Michels scored in the first three minutes of the match. Unlike Wednesday's match, however, the action then stalled, and no team would score again in the first half.
"Collin normally plays as an attacking midfielder, so this was a new position for him," said GCU Assistant Coach Damian Tule. "[GCU Head Coach Tim Mehrhof and I] wanted to try something new on the offensive end and it went well to start (with scoring the goal)."
The Wildcats opened the second half with a renewed sense of urgency, scoring their own "first-few-minutes" goal, but the match's scoring ended there.
Team 1 returns to the Practice Soccer Field on GCU's campus this Friday to take on the University of Texas El Paso Miners at 7:00 PM.
