The
Grand Canyon University Women's Club Soccer Team Purple clamped down on the Arizona State University Gold offense in the second half of their 2022 season opener, shutting the Sun Devils out on the second half on the way to a 4-2 win Sunday night in Tempe. It's the Lopes' 5
th straight victory over the Devils in women's club soccer.
For a women's club soccer program that sports 100 student-athletes, the talent was evident from the start of the match. Four different players –
Katelyn Laccinole,
Noelle Christenson, Mia Stemper and
Kylee Evans – put the ball in the net during the 90 minutes, including Stemper's gamewinner that broke a 2-2 halftime tie early in the 2
nd half. From there, Lopes' goalkeeper
Clarissa Harris and the rest of the defense held the Devils in check to earn the victory.
"We started off slow, which is to be expected with one week of practice together," said
Lopes' Head Coach Hannah Bolton. "The leadership of this team with 15 returners really shows our ability to handle adversity and fight to come back for a win."
GCU Purple Team continues the road trip against archrivals this Sunday morning, October 2
nd, when they square off against the University of Arizona in Tucson. Kickoff is scheduled for 9AM.
