GCU Men’s Lacrosse beats UCLA, USC

Lopes score 29 combined goals in home weekend sweep

GCU Men's Lacrosse performed well enough for a clean sweep of their California conference rivals over the weekend, beating the UCLA Bruins, 22-4, on Saturday and the University of Southern California Trojans, 7-5, on Sunday. The sweep snapped GCU's four-game losing skid and upped the Lopes' overall record to 4-6. The 22 goals scored by the Lopes on Saturday were the most that the offense has manufactured in a single game since March 10, 2017, when they faced Utah State on Prescott field.

While the last GCU win was marked by stellar defense and goaltending, Saturday's victory against UCLA showed just how efficient the Lopes' offense can be. GCU dominated the possession battle en route to an 17-1 lead at halftime, much in thanks to senior Matt Hartig's faceoff record (17-3 on the day, all in the first half).

GCU attackmen Grant Warren and Kyle Capshaw went back and forth with their scoring efforts, each scoring five goals in the first two quarters. Lopes' junior Liam Reid finished with two goals of his own and six assists. Cameron Seymour and Kaiden Atteberry each scored twice, while Cameron Kostka, Donovan Rodas, Jake Hendrickson, Kaden Hodgkison, Landon Gawthrop and Luke Hanson added one score apiece.

The matchup with USC had a much different feel. The Trojans' defense stifled a GCU offense that didn't get into its sets early, allowing USC to build what felt like a meaningful 2-0 lead after one quarter.

From there, the Lopes' offense got into more of a rhythm, scoring seven goals across the remaining three quarters, while the defense tired out the Trojans, forcing four shot clock violations in the same span.

GCU junior goalie Jake Hives boasted an impressive .72 save percentage in the game, up considerably from his already-stout .59 save percentage on the season.
One more game remains on the Lopes' schedule: Senior Night this Saturday at 8PM against Arizona State University. The game will be played at GCU Soccer Stadium, and admission is FREE.
