He wanted balance.
Two games in, he's getting it.
After seeing nine different members of his
Grand Canyon University Men's Club Soccer Team Purple score goals in their season opener,
Lopes' Head Coach Luke Pilarski saw nearly the same type of distribution Sunday afternoon as the Lopes pounded Northern Arizona University, 6-1, in Flagstaff. The result kept the Lopes (2-0 overall, 2-0 Region V) perfect on the young season.
Pilarski has said he isn't expecting any one player to become the breakaway scorer between now and November, and so far, his charges have played that formula out well, since the 16 goals scored have come from 10 different people, and no Lopes' player has more than two scores so far. For the second straight match, the Lopes drained the drama from the match early, pounding out five goals in the match's first 45 minutes. After
Collin Vilme got the Lopes on the scoreboard early, Lopes' freshman
Reeise Remmer officially welcomed himself to the team, pumping back-to-back goals into the NAU net to give GCU more insurance than they'd eventually need.
Luca Guera and
Keegan Acres kept the offensive machine going with goals prior to halftime, and
Ansu Kanneh finished off the match's scoring with the final goal midway through the second half.
"The balance really shows by the fact that our center-midfielder (Vilme) broke through to score first for us – a position you wouldn't normally expect to put it into the back of the net." said Pilarski. "I just enjoy the way they're going about it: the number of passes, the accuracy of those passes, and their composure. All of that really impressed me Sunday."
The Lopes will get a week off, then gear up for back-to-back home matches in as many weekends. The Lopes and Lumberjacks will close out the homestand on Saturday, October 11 at 3PM (a game that will be broadcast LIVE by the Varsity Sports Show), and a week before that, the Lopes' 1
st and 2
nd teams – Purple and Black – will do battle in Region V play against each other. Kickoff on Saturday, October 4
th is scheduled for 6PM. Both matches will be held at
Colter Field on the GCU campus, and admission is FREE.
