Lopes’ swimmers enjoy win in home atmosphere

The Grand Canyon University Club Swimming team opened their season with a home meet, hosting the Desert Classic Swim Invitational at Antelope Pool on October 22nd. The Lopes welcomed athletes from four different schools and walked away with the first-overall team finish.

For many of GCU's swimmers, the meet was their first collegiate competition.

"The home meet was a great opportunity for all of our new athletes to get their nervous jitters out and experience what a real college meet feels like," said GCU Head Coach Jeremy Phung. "The atmosphere and comradery are always so unique for new swimmers coming from high school or club swimming. It was great for them to be led by our returners who showed them the way."

GCU topped the team scores with 2,724 combined points between the men and women, nearly doubling ASU Swim Club's 1515.50 combined points in second place.

"I think that winning this meet was a good boost for our team heading into regionals. We needed to see how fast our team really is to give us some confidence moving forward," said Phung. "This year we have Western Regionals for the first time in College Club Swimming history, so it will be really cool to see how we hold our own against the region."

On November 5, the Lopes travel to Salt Lake City, Utah to compete in the CCS Western Regionals.
