Mesa, AZ – Not far from home, Grand Canyon University Club Swimming closed out a remarkable 2024–25 season with a powerful showing at the 2025 College Club Swimming National Championships, returning with a mix of podium finishes and individual titles.
Leading the way for the Lopes was
Isabella Parish, who won the 100-meter breaststroke in nail-biting fashion and then dominated the 200-meter breaststroke for the second year in a row.
"Isabella does something you can't teach, which is racing," said GCU Head Coach Jeremy Phung. "She is so hard to beat because there is nothing she loves more than competing. She still carries everything a championship swimmer should, which is hard work and dedication, but once you put her in a race, she is so hard to beat because she just wants to win."
On the men's side, Lopes' freshman Trypp Duarte delivered a strong performance of his own, capturing 3rd place in the 200-meter freestyle with a thrilling finish.
"It was incredible to see Trypp step up as such a young swimmer on the biggest stage," said Phung. "His mental resilience is so impressive and it's what makes him so great. With a total of 18 swims for us in 2 1/2 days, he really stepped up to the challenge
."
Next up for Duarte? A step up to the NCAA Swimming program as a sophomore.
"When I recruited Trypp, there were early discussions about his desire to train his way up to the D1 team," said Phung. "He could've taken the easy route and just focused on the events that would get him there, but he's been such a team player by taking on more to help us out."
The Lopes also made noise in the relay events, with the men's 800m freestyle relay and 400m medley relay teams both claiming 3
rd-place finishes. Lopes' junior
Kyle Stocek led the way, setting a program record and pacing the field with a 1:40.15 first split in the 800m and anchoring the 400m medley with a 45.15, the 2
nd fastest split on the weekend.
"Our relays have been a big focus all season," Phung said. "There are too many swimmers to single out and recognize, because it's always a huge team effort. It's easy to shrug off the relays when you're tired, but we have a culture here where swimmers all want to contribute
."
GCU finished 10
th on the men's side, 7
th in the women's, and 8
th in combined scoring with 741 points.
"I am incredibly proud of this team," said Phung. "There are so many individual stories of resilience and overcoming adversity. We also graduated a large class this year and I'm going to miss that group dearly, but we can't wait to get back to work in the fall."
