GCU Club Swimming tops podium at CCS Western Regionals

Lopes continue fast start in Salt Lake City

The Grand Canyon University Club Swim traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah this past weekend for the first-ever College Club Swimming Western Regional meet, coming home with the top scores in the men's, women's, and combined team sections.

"We knew going in that we had a real shot at winning the meet," said GCU Head Coach Jeremy Phung. "Overall, we swam great, executed where we needed to, and are trending in a good direction now."

The Lopes totaled 2357.5 points for the combined team section, ahead of 2nd-place University of Colorado (1863 points) and 3rd-place University of Utah Club (1693 points).

For GCU, a team who hasn't participated in many long, three-day meets in the past, the CCS Western Regionals can play a big part in preparing them for nationals.

"This is a great boost of experience for our team," said Phung. "It lets us get a glimpse at how long the national meet will be. Last year we traveled, sure, but we weren't ready for three-day meets and how long they can feel."

There's still a long way to go before the 2023 CCS National Championships on March 31. GCU's next meet takes place this Saturday, November 19 in Surprise, where they take on the field in the Ottawa Invite.
