"I like where are team is at," said GCU Head Coach Ryan Woodworth. "We have a very young team, so every time we get to play in these big-time events, we will continue to learn and get better."
Coming off the 2021 Fall National Collegiate Club Golf Association Nationals where the Lopes finished No. 5,and the 2022 Spring Nationals where the team finished No. 4, that trend continued as the Grand Canyon University Men's Club Golf team finished No. 6 at the 30-team NCCGA Fall Nationals at the Paiute Golf Resort in Las Vegas this weekend. The Lopes totaled 760 strokesacross the two-day tournament.
This fall, the Lopes have often been slow starters, regularly having better later rounds and catching teams on the second day of tournaments. This weekend, however, was out of the norm, since GCU was eight strokes underpar through the first six holes.
"We couldn't have asked for a better start - which is the opposite of what we have done at past tournaments," said Woodworth. "Unfortunately, the wind really picked up for the remainder of the tournament and it made it really tough on us."
The fast start allowed the Lopes to place 4th after the first day, with just four strokes between them and No. 2 University of Virginia. The University of Florida stood in front of the pack - 11 strokes better than the rest.
"Both days, I thought we hit the ball really well," said Woodworth. "We just struggled around the greens and our putters got cold."
