Results speak for themselves.
Grand Canyon University Men's Club Golf took home a team win November 8-9 in the second National Collegiate Club Golf Association Fall Desert Regional at Oakcreek Country Club in Sedona, Arizona. The Lopes shot a total score of 738 – almost 20 points better than the runner-up, Arizona State University (B). If that wasn't enough, the Lopes placed just as well individually, with an especially strong showing from one of the team's seniors
Cruz Combs.
Combs, tied for third after a 74-stroke first round, dropped eight strokes in the second round to score 140 overall and take the individual win.
"Going into round two I had a main goal of trying to hit everything to the center of the green and give myself looks for birdie," said Combs. "By doing that the putter got hot and the cup felt like the size of a basketball hoop - everything was going in."
Consistent games from GCU golfers Zach Cozza and
Aaron Moore also paid off. They both shot 74 in each round on their way to top-5 finishes.
"It's great for us to be back in the win column," said GCU Head Coach
Ryan Woodworth. "We have a lot of new guys on the team this season, so to be able to win a tournament will definitely help with confidence, as well as nerves, moving forward."
The Lopes' win justifies their status as
the second-ranked club golf team in the country.
"The team is dedicated and it shows in our finishes at our tournaments," said Combs. "The guys are always at the course practicing, playing, and pushing each other every day to get better and better."
