New blood, same competitive spirit.
On September 20-21 Grand Canyon University Men's Club Golf hostedÂ
yet another National Collegiate Club Golf Association Desert Regional tournament at the GCU Club Golf Course, falling short of Arizona State University by just one stroke, 709-710. Despite losing three of last year's Team 'A' golfers, the Lopes stayed competitive thanks some new contributors, headlined byÂ
Aaron Moore's field-leading five-under-par score.
"Team wise it was close all weekend," saidÂ
GCU Head Coach Ryan Woodworth. "We lost some veteran players to graduation so there were some big shoes to fill. Our guys played great but unfortunately, we let the lead slip away down the stretch."
The lead that Woodworth refers to was four strokes after round one, much in part due to seniors
Cruz Combs and Zach Cozza each shooting two-under and Moore shooting an even 71 on Saturday.
"Aaron [Moore] really stepped up this weekend with his overall win, especially on day two where he shot five-under," said Woodworth. "The difference between the two days came down to putts. He had chances to sink putts on day one, but they just didn't fall. Welcome to golf."
While Moore finished with a score of 137, Lopes' sophomore
Jack Clements scored an even 142, and the aforementioned Combs and Cozza each finished with scores of 143.
"This tournament was a good learning experience for the new guys on the roster," said Woodworth. "We will have to get better at playing under some pressure and finishing strong, which will come as the season progresses."
