With eight players finishing in the top 10, including two players from the "B" team and two from the "C" team, the Grand Canyon University Club Golf team left no stone unturned en route to its huge win at the second National Collegiate Club Golf Association Desert Regional tournament of the fall season. The Lopes finished in first place with 703 strokes, 17 under par.
"The team is picking up right where we left off last season," said GCU Head Coach Ryan Woodworth. "We added quite a few new players who have the ability to shoot low scores at any given time."
One of those new players, Mt. San Antonio College transfer
Brandon Winters, won the entire tournament with a 6-under score of 138, while team captain
David Charos finished tied for second with a score of 139.
"[Brandon] was hitting the ball extremely well all weekend and we really took advantage of that," said Woodworth. "Our captain,
David Charos, has also had a great start to the year. He is striking the balls with a lot of confidence and seems determined to win a championship."
Woodworth also gave credit to sophomore
Lucas Hughes, who led the tournament after Day 1, shooting 4-under. Hughes went on to finish tied for 6
th overall.
For the Lopes' "B" team, freshmen duo
Zane Aiken and
Angelo Luciani led the way, both finishing tied for fourth at 141.
"To see those kinds of finishes from our other teams is impressive," said Woodworth. "It really shows how deep our team is this season."
Woodworth sees the mix of new talent with returners as a potent mix for the future.
"We have a lot of really talented young golfers - who are inspired by our veterans - that are determined to win nationals this year," said Woodworth. "It's a great mix, and it's so much fun to watch these guys work hard. I can't wait to see how it plays out."
