"This was an incredible team win for us."
GCU Head Coach Ryan Woodworth didn't put it lightly when recapping his team's performance in their second National Collegiate Club Golf Association Desert Regional tournament of the spring, where the Grand Canyon University Men's Golf team finished in first place with 743 strokes. The GCU "B" team also finished third in the tournament - 30 strokes behind the Lopes' A team.
A combination of unfamiliarity with the course in Boulder City, Nevada, and a lack of putts falling forced the Lopes into a situation similar to the last Desert Regional tournament as they trailed first-place Arizona State after the first day. The Lopes had four golfers within four strokes of par during Day 1.
The second day was completely different for GCU.
Dillyn Schmidke and
Lucas Hughes led the way, shooting 2-under and 1-under, respectively. The Lopes also had five other golfers within five of even par.
"Everyone stepped up their game on the second day," said Woodworth. "[Dillyn] was able to hit some greens in regulation and make some stellar putts. Lucas's game was just solid all around. We played hard and it was great to see."
The solid all-around golfing from GCU led them to a 7-stroke victory over the Sun Devils, who had no golfer at or under par on Day 2.
Hughes finished second overall for the tournament with a 3-over 147.
