GCU Club Golf secures bid to NCCGA Nationals

Lopes outpace field by 12 strokes to win Desert Regional 3

"What a weekend for our team."

The Grand Canyon University Men's Golf team followed up their first-place finish at the second National Collegiate Club Golf Association Desert Regional tournament with an even more impressive 29-under-par team finish at the third NCCGA Regional tournament in Gilbert Saturday, securing first place in the Desert Region as well as a bid to the NCCGA National Championships in West Lafayette, Indiana at the end of the month. The GCU "B" team finished the tournament in third place for the second straight time, trailing the Lopes' "A" team by 40 strokes.

"Coming into the weekend, we knew we'd have to put up some low numbers based on how the course had been playing this season," said GCU Head Coach Ryan Woodworth. "Our golfers did not disappoint."

Shooting 342 as a team in the first round allowed the Lopes to open a 15-stroke lead over Arizona State after Day 1, and the Lopes never looked back. GCU golfer Antonio Bulgheroni won the tournament with a score of -14, while the foursome of David Charos, Lucas Hughes, Mark McCabe, and Dillyn Schmidke also each added scores or even par or better for the Lopes' "A" squad.

"[Antonio] played with a ton of confidence," said Woodworth. "He has been close to having a breakout all year, so it was good to see it all come together this weekend. It was also nice to see David have a solid weekend, (since) he's another guy who's been so close all year."

Not to be forgotten, the GCU "B" team strung together another impressive third-place finish at a Desert Regional tournament, led by Kaden Boyter, who shot -11 on the weekend.

"Kaden had a really solid performance," said Woodworth. "He's bounced between the "A" and "B" team all year, but he always keeps working."

Here are the full tournament results:
