Back to back.
After extreme weather cancelled the final round of PGA National Collegiate Club Golf Association Nationals in Thackerville, Oklahoma, the Grand Canyon University Club Golf team was crowned national co-champion with Miami University (Ohio) based on their respective performances in Round 1. The Lopes finished an even-par 360 on the Redbud Course, while the RedHawks topped the Scissortail Course field with a 14-over-par score of 74. This is the second consecutive NCCGA National title for the Lopes,Â
who took home the 2023 Fall team and individual title (via Brandon Winters)Â as well.
"Going into the week, we saw the weather forecasts showing a lot of predicted wind and major rain, so we knew we would have to get an early lead," said GCU Head Coach Ryan Woodworth. "To have three guys shoot under par in the conditions out there was incredible."
The inclement weather that the Lopes were dealing with in Oklahoma made national headlines as severe thunderstorms and tornados with winds over 100 miles per hour passed through the area surrounding the WinStar Golf Club.
Despite the conditions, GCU golfers
Angelo Luciani,
Dillyn Schmidke and
Lucas Hughes all finished in the top three for the Redbud Course in Round 1. The finishes earned the trio All-Tournament honors, while Luciani's weekend-best 4-under finish crowned him the co-individual champion.
"I am so proud of these guys," said Woodworth. "To win back-to-back championships is not an easy task, and the fact that we return all but one of them next year really has [Lopes' Assistant Coach] Mike [Mueller] and I looking forward to next season."

"Last of all, I would like to thank
Mark McCabe who graduated this spring," said Woodworth. "He has been a huge part of this program and has helped guide the younger guys over the last couple of years."
McCabe, a Fullerton, California native, was the lone Lopes' senior that traveled with the 'A' team to nationals.
