"It's always special winning at your home course," said GCU Club Golf Head Coach Ryan Woodworth following the National Collegiate Club Golf Association Desert Regional II tournament, which was hosted, and won, by the Lopes at the GCU Golf Course on September 21.
The Lopes' 'A' team finished in first place with 694 strokes, 16 under par. GCU's
Brandon Winters won the tournament individually with an overall score of -7.
The first day of the tournament featured steady wind and an equally steady Arizona State University team that maintained a 1-stroke lead on the Lopes until the end of the first round.
"I was surprised we didn't shoot lower on day one, but conditions were windy and there weren't many scoring opportunities," said Woodworth. "Day two was a different story."
Day two was, in fact, a different story. The Lopes bounced back from their relatively lackluster first round with a 16-under day two, blowing past ASU in the process and cementing their final, 8-stroke lead.
GCU's
Angelo Luciani rounded out the top three at the tournament, finishing with a six-under total score of 136. Zach Cozza and Kaden Boyter also finished under par for the Lopes, with total scores of 141 each.
